Like Chapstick, Kleenex, and Band-Aid, Botox has become the go-to name for all injectable neuromodulators that freeze facial muscles, smoothing wrinkles or preventing them from deepening. But, many patients don’t know that there are some key differences between Botox and its lesser-known cousins like Dysport, Xeomin, and now Daxxify.
Daxxify
Daxxify is the newest option in the smoothing space. While results for Botox and similar injectables typically last around 3 months, some studies say results for Daxxify can last up to six months, which means fewer treatments each year to maintain your look. Another benefit? You can start seeing results in as little as one day. I am definitely seeing a small but growing group of Daxxify loyalists in my practice.
Dysport
While Botox is the most prescribed in this category, Dysport is the second and growing fast in popularity within the Austin metropolitan area. The results are very similar, but there are some small differences. The formulation for Dysport seems to spread wider compared to Botox, making it great for larger areas like the forehead.
Results typically last three to six months, but results for Dysport tend to kick in faster for many clients and patients – about two days compared to Botox’s three to five.
Xeomin
Xeomin’s key difference lies in the formula: All injectable neuromodulators are packaged with similar purified proteins. While Botox and similar rely on carrier proteins to deliver the medication that softens facial muscles, Xeomin removes those carrier proteins. Because it contains only the active ingredient, it does not need refrigeration.
Most patients report very similar results to Botox and Dysport, so it often comes down to a matter of personal preference.
Botox
Most patients come in asking for Botox — and for good reason. It has been safely used in aesthetic medicine for decades and has millions of customers worldwide. I typically recommend patients start with Botox to see if they like the overall results of injectables in this category before trying others. Many patients love it and stick with it.
Results tend to kick in about three days, peak at seven to ten days, and last three months. If you have an event that’s right around the corner, you might opt for Dysport for quicker onset.
All four are great options for specific situations; be sure to do your research and seek the counsel of a trusted injector with lots of experience.
