Pregnancy, childbirth, perimenopause, and the effects of aging can all leave their mark on your breasts. As a board-certified plastic surgeon, I’m passionate about helping my patients regain confidence in their bodies through personalized solutions.
Pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding are undeniably beautiful and fulfilling experiences. However, they can also lead to breast atrophy (shrinkage) and stress on breast tissue. The hormonal fluctuations and physical demands of these processes can result in changes such as reduced breast size, loss of fullness, and decreased elasticity. Similarly, perimenopause and menopause bring about a decrease in estrogen levels, further changing the shape of your breasts and contributing to atrophy.
In addition to these natural life events, the aging process itself takes its toll on breast tissue. Collagen loss and skin laxity are common, leading to changes in breast shape and firmness. Fortunately, we have many effective surgical solutions to address these concerns and boost any confidence that may have been lost.
Breast Implants in your 40s
One of the most reliable methods for reestablishing lost breast structure is breast augmentation — particularly cohesive gel silicone implants. These implants not only enhance volume, but also give a natural-looking shape and firmness that can help feel more comfortable in their bodies.
Breast Lift in your 40s
In some cases, additional procedures may be necessary to optimize breast shape and appearance. Mastopexy, or breast lift surgery, can help address skin laxity and sagging, restoring a more youthful contour. For those seeking both volume and lift, I typically recommend both a breast lift and breast augmentation with implants.
Breast & Chest Liposuction
For patients looking to remove excess fat deposits around the breasts, liposuction is one of my favorite procedures to do in conjunction with breast augmentation. By targeting areas such as the sides of the chest and above the armpits, we can sometimes sculpt a more balanced chest contour than implants alone.
Skin Rejuvenation Procedures
For women concerned about stretch marks or skin texture, skin rejuvenation procedures like laser resurfacing and microneedling can provide noticeable improvements, enhancing the overall appearance of the breasts.
Maintaining Breast Health in Your 40s
As a doctor, I must also stress the importance of looking after your breast health by prioritizing regular breast cancer screenings. The American Cancer Society recommends annual mammograms for women of average risk, starting at age 45. However, individual risk factors may warrant earlier or more frequent screening, so it’s crucial to discuss personalized screening recommendations with your primary care physician or your OBGYN.
At our practice, we’re committed to helping patients navigate these changes with compassion and personalized, expert care. We believe that everyone deserves to feel confident and comfortable in their own skin, and we’re here to provide the support and solutions needed to achieve your goals.
