Breast Implant Revision/Implant Exchange FAQs
Breast Augmentation Replacement
Over time, women may consider breast implant replacement for various reasons. While modern breast implants are designed to be durable, they are not lifetime devices. Many patients choose to have their implants replaced after 10-15 years, or when they experience changes in their bodies or preferences.
One common reason for considering a new surgery is an implant rupture. This can occur with both saline implants (where the saline leaks out) and silicone gel implants (where the rupture may be silent). Another concern for some women is breast implant illness (BII), a term used to describe a range of symptoms that some individuals believe are linked to their breast implants.
The surgical procedure for breast augmentation replacement involves the existing implants being removed or replaced. Depending on the individual’s goals and the condition of the breast tissue, the surgeon may recommend a different type of implant in terms of size, shape, or material. For instance, a patient might decide to switch from saline implants to silicone gel, or vice versa, or opt for a different projection to achieve their desired breast shape.
A consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon, potentially a member of the society of plastic surgeons, is crucial to determine the best course of action. They can assess your individual needs and discuss the risks and benefits of different implant options to help you achieve your aesthetic goals and ensure your safety and satisfaction.
