Breast Augmentation in Your 20s
When considering breast augmentation in your 20s, there are several things to think about to make sure you feel confident going into surgery and to get the results you want. Here’s what I share with my prospective patients as we begin mapping out their treatment plans:
Are you a good candidate?
The FDA recommends patients be at least 22 years old before undergoing breast augmentation with silicone implants. Otherwise, you should be in good health with no active infections, untreated illnesses, or medical conditions. It’s important to be upfront with your surgeon and their expert team so they can ensure you’re healthy enough for surgery. I also advise patients not to smoke or drink to excess pre- and post-procedure to make sure they heal properly.
What’s your ideal result?
Spend some time online and save imagery you like to your camera roll. You’re looking for examples of the size, shape, and placement you’d like to achieve. Do you want side boob or absolutely not? What do you want your cleavage to look like? Check out the before and after imagery in my gallery or on other sites – having examples of swimsuit photos or how you’d like clothing to fit helps me understand your ideal. We may not always be able to safely achieve what you want since it depends on many factors including your body type and anatomy, but it gives me a good understanding of where to start the conversation.
Silicone, or Saline?
Breast implants come in many sizes, shapes, and materials. Saline and silicone implants are the two primary choices, each with its own set of advantages. Silicone implants are by far the preferred choice. Not all silicone implants are created the same – some provide more structure than others. We’ll guide you and help you choose the best option based on your goals and body type.
What’s your ideal volume?
Choosing the right implant volume is crucial to achieving a balanced and natural appearance. In your consultation, we’ll assist you in selecting a volume and profile that complements your frame and aligns with your aesthetic goals. It’s important to think about form and function: Will the size you’ve selected work for your lifestyle, hobbies, clothing preferences, etc?
Scars & incisions
Breast augmentation requires incisions, and the type and location of these incisions can affect scarring. Common incision options include inframammary (beneath the breast), periareolar (around the areola), and transaxillary (in the armpit). Most commonly, I recommend the inframammary approach as this allows the best access to perform the necessary work with optimal precision. Your surgeon will discuss which option is best for you and explain how to minimize scarring through proper care.
Long-term commitment
Breast implants are not a one-time investment. They may require maintenance or replacement over time due to factors like changes in your body, or even implant-related issues such as capsular contracture or, rarely, rupture. Be prepared for follow-up appointments and potential future procedures to maintain your desired results.
Emotional preparation
Breast augmentation can boost self-confidence and enhance your body image. However, it’s essential to have realistic expectations and to undergo surgery for the right reasons. Consult with friends, and family, to ensure that you feel confident and prepared for your procedure and the healing process.
