Andy Cohen and Elon Musk have tweeted about it, it’s trending with your favorite influencers and celebrities on TikTok, and someone you know probably has a prescription. We’re talking about the diabetes drug Ozempic which many people are now using off-label for weight loss. It’s so widely popular that many practices are reporting that the drug has decreased the demand for liposuction. While the role of this medication is still being defined in the aesthetics space, it’s helpful to know what they can do — and where they fall short. Ozempic vs. liposuction? Here’s how to choose:
What’s the difference between Ozempic and VASER Liposuction?
Non-Surgical Approach: Ozempic (semaglutide) is an injectable medication originally designed to be taken by diabetics that contains semaglutide, which regulates blood sugar and insulin. It’s now a non-surgical option for weight management, making it an appealing choice for those who want to avoid surgery or have medical conditions that make surgery risky.
Appetite Control: Ozempic reduces your appetite and helps you feel fuller faster, which can lead to gradual and sustainable weight loss.
Medical Supervision: Ozempic is prescribed by healthcare professionals and should be taken under their supervision. Regular follow-ups are essential to monitor its effectiveness and safety.
Long-Term Commitment: Ozempic is most effective when used as part of a comprehensive weight management plan, which includes diet and exercise changes. It may require a long-term commitment to see significant results.
VASER Liposuction or “Lipo”
Targeted Sculpting: Liposuction is a well-established cosmetic procedure that removes fat cells from specific areas of the body, such as the abdomen, thighs, hips, or arms. Liposuction is particularly effective for localized fat deposits that do not respond well to diet and exercise. It can provide immediate and noticeable results. At my practice, I offer VASER Liposuction, which allows me to add ultrasound technology to the procedure for dramatically improved results.
Surgical Procedure: Liposuction is a surgical procedure that requires local or general anesthesia, tiny incisions, and some downtime. This means it comes with the typical risks and benefits associated with surgery, but is very safe in expert hands.
Permanent Results: Once fat cells are removed through liposuction, they do not return to the treated areas. However, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential to prevent fat accumulation in other areas.
Skin Tightening: In some cases, liposuction may require additional treatments like Sofwave, Ultherapy, or Bodytite to achieve the best results, especially if you have any skin laxity.
How to choose between Lipo and Ozempic
Goals: Determine whether you’re looking for immediate, localized fat reduction (liposuction) or gradual, overall weight loss (Ozempic). Ozempic may also help reduce visceral fat (fat that wraps around your abdominal organs deep inside your body), which liposuction cannot address. VASER liposuction allows for artistic contouring to change the shape of your body, accentuate certain areas and deemphasize other areas.
Health status: My team and I can help determine if you’re a candidate for either procedure, especially if you have underlying medical conditions.
Recovery: Consider your tolerance for downtime and recovery. Liposuction typically involves a shorter recovery period than surgery, but Ozempic is non-invasive.
Lifestyle: Assess your ability to make dietary and lifestyle changes. Ozempic requires a commitment to diet and exercise modifications for optimal results.
Budget: Compare the costs associated with both options, including the potential need for multiple Ozempic prescriptions.
We’re still learning about Ozempic’s role in people who are not diabetic and not obese. Ultimately safety will determine whether it crosses over from medical uses to aesthetic uses like Botox, Sculptra, and Latisse have. Many of our partner clinics prescribe Ozempic, and as your plastic surgeon, my goal is to provide you with the information and guidance necessary to make an informed decision.
